Overview

This unit enables students to research and analyse the functions and purposes of design management and its relationship to strategic and operational values of organisations. The unit aims to provide students with advanced and integrated understanding of the role and purpose of design managers, and the specific skills and capabilities required for managing design projects. It will give students an enhanced understanding of the relationships between strategy, design and management, and provide the specialised knowledge and skills required to be an effective design manager.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Research and apply current theories, practices and trends in design management, and communicate specific ideas and skills to specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • Critically reflect on the relationship between organisational strategy, design and operational management
  • Analyse the strengths and weakness of current practice in organisations, and communicate the outcomes through concise, coherent and well-structured documentation, design artefacts and presentations
  • Interpret and convey the possibilities, opportunities and areas of refinement in design management within specific contexts
  • Demonstrate and evaluate participation, contribution and collaboration within teams
