Higher Education VTAC Course Codes

The 5 digit VTAC Course Code is used in your VTAC online application. These codes tell VTAC what course type, campus and fee structure you are applying for.

There are two types of Higher Education courses:

Type 1: Commonwealth Supported Place

VTAC Course Codes for Higher Education courses that end in a "1" (eg. 34181) represent a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP); they are subsidised by the Australian Government. You are required to pay only a proportion of the cost of your course, known as the student contribution, and the Australian Government pays the rest.

Application for Type 1 courses is only offered to domestic applicants who are a:

  • Australian citizen,
  • New Zealand citizen, or
  • Holder of an Australian Permanent Visa

Australian Citizen or Holder of an Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa

If you fall in this category, you have 3 payment options to choose from as a CSP student:

  • Pay the full student contribution up-front with a 10% discount; or
  • Pay some of the student contribution up-front (with a 10% discount for payments of $500 or more) and use HECS-HELP (deferred payment, repaid through the taxation system) to pay for the remainder; or
  • Use HECS-HELP (deferred payment, repaid through the taxation system) to pay for the full student contribution.

New Zealand Citizen or Holder of an Australian Permanent Visa

If you are a New Zealand citizen or holder of an Australian permanent visa (other than a permanent humanitarian visa) you are required to pay your student contribution up-front in full each semester. You are not eligible for HECS-HELP or a discount on your student contribution.

Type 3: International Fee

VTAC Course Codes for Higher Education courses that end in a "3" (eg. 34183) represent International Fee-Paying courses. Only International VCE students and International IB students currently studying a Year 12 in Victoria can apply for these courses. All other International Students do not apply through VTAC, but apply through Swinburne International.

For Type 3 courses you will pay the tuition fee directly to Swinburne each semester or year.
