Monday 28th May 2012 to Thursday 31st May 2012 inclusive.
Formal Examination period
Friday 1st June 2012 to Friday 15th June 2012 inclusive.
Exam Times
Examinations will be scheduled as follows:
- Monday to Thursday: 9:00, 14:00 and 18:00
- Friday & Saturday: 9:00 and 14:00
Examination Timetable Publication Dates Semester 1, 2012
- The Provisional Timetable is released via My.Swinburne, approx 4-5 weeks prior to the examination period and is subject to change.
- The Final version (including exam locations and seat allocation number) will be released approx 2 weeks prior to the examination period.
- Students are advised to check their examination timetable via My.Swinburne prior to each scheduled exam.

Exam Regulations 2012
In 2012 examination security practice will be standardised. We will phase in consistent application of these regulations. It is important that you are aware of what materials are and are not allowed in exams and that you try to follow the regulations.
Mobile phone detectors will be in use during exams. Phones must be switched off and on the floor or in your bag.
What can I have on my exam desk?
always:
- Exam paper and other supplied examination stationery (supplied at your desk)
- Pens and pencils, bring extra if you can
- Eraser (no writing or notes)
- Protractor, ruler or other graphing implements if required (no writing or notes on materials)
- Clear or opaque water bottle with no writing or labels of any kind. If the bottle is transparent then the liquid must be transparent also.
- A small amount of hard sweets or lollies in clear wrappers (e.d. barley sugars). They must have no writing on or near them. If they are disruptive they may be removed.
Sometimes:
- Calculator (if allowed) and spare batteries.
- Books or notes as specified by your Convenor in your exam instructions (if allowed)
What is not allowed on my desk or on my person (e.g. in pockets)?
- Food other than approved sweets/lollies
- Pencil cases
- Note paper or post-its
- Anything with any amount of writing or labels on it, if you have approved items you may be asked to remove labels
- Electronic devices of any kind
If you have any of these objects you should place them in your bag and under your chair or as directed by the supervisor. Check your pockets before the exam starts.
If you have food or unauthorised drink bottles on your desk you then the supervisor may inspect them and you may be asked to dispose of them. If your water bottle has a label on it bins will be provided in or near the exam room to dispose of the label prior to entering the exam room.
Mobile phones:
Your mobile phone must be switched off and in your bag, under your chair, or in another location away from you as directed by the exam supervisor. Mobile phones must have all alarms deactivated and be switched off. If your phone is on or turns on to play an alarm you will be considered in breach. Mobile phone detectors will be in use during examinations.
If in doubt remove the battery and place it in your bag, under your seat.
Venues for Semester 1, 2012 Exams
Allow plenty of travel time.
Written exams for students studying at Hawthorn and Prahran campuses and Oxford Aviation Academy will be scheduled at:
- Melbourne Park Function Centre or
- Hawthorn Campus.
Lab and Presentation exams will be held on Hawthorn Campus.
All exams for students studying at Lilydale campus will be scheduled at Lilydale campus.
Lilydale students studying a unit at Hawthorn can expect to sit the exam for that unit with the Hawthorn students at one of the locations detailed below.
External Exam Venues
Students are responsible for their own travel arrangements, and should allow sufficient time to travel to exam venues.

Tram 70 (Wattle Park) Tram services from Flinders Street and Richmond Stations stop at Rod Laver Arena (Stop 7B). Rod Laver Arena (Stop 7B) is the closest to the Function Centre. |

Seat Allocations
Student seat allocations will be displayed on students personal timetable via My.Swinburne in the Final Version of the examination timetable.
Students are required to sit at their allocated seat. Student should print their desk allocations and bring it with them to all exams.
Desk allocations will NOT be posted outside venues; however, information stations will be open at the venues 30 mins prior to the session start.
Student identity cards
Student identity cards must be brought to each examination.
If you do not have your student identity card they may be purchased from the Student Information Centre. A current passport or current Australian driver licence can be used for identification.
Examination Requirements
- Examination requirements, as outlined on this page and in the Assessment & Appeals Policy, must be complied with.
- If you are sitting a multi-day seminar or lab exam, please check your individual exam start times in My.Swinburne when timetables are published or refer to your lecturer.
- If you think you have an exam but it is not listed in your My.Swinburne Exam Timetable please contact your Faculty to confirm whether there is a formal examination scheduled.

4.4 Conduct of Examinations
4.4.1 Unless otherwise stated on the examination timetable, the following arrangements will apply...
(b) students must be available for examinations for the entire examination period and special examination period. The examination period is determined in a manner to include provision for resitting of examinations which were cancelled, interrupted or ceased due to unforeseeable circumstances.
Conduct in examinations
Swinburne University of Technology takes exams very seriously. All irregularities or instances of examination misconduct (eg. cheating) will be investigated. Where necessary a formal Examination and Assessment Discipline Panel will be convened and penalties imposed if warranted.
Examination timetable clashes
Any student who has two examinations scheduled at the same time (for example two examinations scheduled for the same morning) must report this information in writing on the Examination Clash Notification Form.

Examination timetable clashes must be reported by 27th April 2012.
The application must be lodged at your school/faculty office.
Special Consideration, Illness & Absence from an examination
Students are expected to attend examinations at the scheduled time. It is the students responsibility to notify the Unit Convenor or the Faculty's Manager of Students and Programs as soon as possible if you are unable to attend a test or examination.
If you are absent from an examination due to illness, misadventure or other extraordinary circumstance reasonably beyond your control, you may apply for special consideration. Special consideration may also apply if your performance in an exam has been affected by illness or other serious cause.
If you apply for Special Consideration the possible outcomes are:
- Additional assessment (includes the granting of a special exam)
- Recommendation to seek the assistance of the disability support services
- No action
- Reject the application
Please Note: As of Semester 2, 2009 grade consideration is no longer a possible outcome of special consideration. Your grade will not be increased if you apply for special consideration, the only possible outcomes are those listed above.
The application must be lodged no later than 5pm of the third working day after the day of the examination.
Late Applications
An application made after the relevant date (late application), or not on the approved form, may be lodged with the Manager, Students and Programs (MSP) of the Awarding Academic Unit for evaluation by the Unit Convener. In circumstances where the Convener is satisfied that it was not possible for the application to have been made on the prescribed form or on an earlier date, the application will be evaluated. It should be anticipated, however, that late applications will not normally be considered.
Special Exams Period
Special Examinations for Higher Education at Hawthorn, Prahran and Lilydale will be held:

Students who apply for and are granted a special examination due to illness, misadventure or other extraordinary cause or circumstance, but who subsequently do not attend due to further or continued illness or extraordinary circumstance, shall be afforded the opportunity to apply for one additional special examination only. This examination, subject to the approval of the relevant Dean, will be set in the next examination period when this unit of study is offered. If a student fails this examination, or fails to attend the examination, a zero mark will be recorded for this assessment item.
Please note that different rules apply for TAFE external examinations set by the Office of Post-Compulsory Education, Training and Employment (OPCETE/VETASSESS). Contact your department for details.
Results
When available, results will be viewable on the My.Swinburne Portal.
