Credit Transfer, Exemptions & Recognised Prior Learning (RPL)
The words 'Credit Transfer' and 'Exemptions' are often used interchangeably.
What is an Exemption?
An exemption (also known as credit transfer) means a student is not required to take a certain unit within a course on the basis of work experience or studies already completed at another educational institution. There are five types of exemptions available:
- A matched exemption, where a student is exempted from a particular subject
- A partial exemption, where a student is exempted from a part or percentage of a particular subject.
- An unmatched exemption, where a student is given an exemption/s which is not linked to any particular subject/s (it is often given in the form of credit points or exemption from elective requirements of a course)
- A "block" exemption, where a student is exempted from a significant period of a course, such as a semester, a year or a specified number of credit points, rather than from specified subjects
- An exemption based on recognition of prior learning
Domestic Applicants
If you are enrolling online, you should upload a completed Application for Exemption form and supporting documentation via the Enrolment Online Tool.
The Enrolment Online Tool will inform you if you need to attend an Exemption Session on campus. If you need to attend an Exemption Session on campus, you will need to bring your original or certified copies of supporting documentation with you to the Exemption Session.
A number of Faculties provide Exemption Sessions. If your Faculty is offering an Exemption Session, this information will be provided in your VTAC Offer Message and/or indicated on the Enrolment Online Tool.
International Applicants
If you are an international student you will already have received advice about exemptions as part of your offer. Some Faculties will allow students to apply for additional exemptions upon arrival in the country. You will be provided with more details about Exemption Sessions (if applicable) at your International Welcome Session.
Supporting Documentation Requirements
If you intend to apply for credit transfer/exemptions or RPL, you will need to provide both original official documents (eg. transcript of results, subject/unit descriptions and evidence of relevant work) and a certified photocopy of the supporting documentation as part of your enrolment.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) means a student is granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training which effectively means that they:
Will be exempt from completing certain units within a course; or
In the case of recognition of uncredentialled prior learning:
May be exempted from completing units; or allowed to substitute more advanced units within the course irrespective of prerequisite requirements.
Within the Higher Education sector, the recognition for credit of prior 'informal' learning, that is the knowledge, skills, attitudes and/or attributes which have been acquired other than from an Australian university or TAFE institute. Recognition of Prior Learning, or 'RPL', involves the systematic assessment and acknowledgment of relevant and verifiable skills, knowledge and competencies acquired formally or experientially over the five (5) years prior to application to undertake a course of study.

Understanding Room Numbers
Room numbers at Swinburne University contain all the information that you need to find that particular room. Each room number is made up of two letters followed by numbers eg BA613. The letters tell you what building the room is in and the first number indicates the level in that building eg. BA613 will be in the BA building on level 6. The full room number (BA613) will appear on the door of the room when you get there so you will know you are in the right place.
