Foundations of Teaching Practice

The Program

The Foundations of Teaching Practice program, designed specifically for sessional teaching staff at Swinburne, consists of two half-day workshops covering the key aspects of teaching and learning in the higher education context such as planning classes, teaching strategies, assessment, marking and feedback.

After successfully completing this program, participants should be able to:

  • InvestigateĀ learning styles and approaches to learning and their influence on or relationship to teaching approaches or methodologies
  • Interpret a unit outline in the program context in order to create teaching plans using curriculum design principles
  • Design a teaching session taking into account the teaching and learning environment
  • Apply effective feedback strategies for summative and formative assessment
  • Use reflection, evaluation and feedback as a tool for improving practice
  • Explore the issues around professional behaviours and ethics within the context of the relevant policy
  • Use Blackboard to support teaching and learning

Workshop content

The following topics will be addressed in the workshops:

  • How can Learning Styles be useful?
  • Strategies that encourage active learning
  • Using the lesson planning template
  • How do you start /finish a class?
  • Strategies for effective feedback
  • Assessment principles
  • Professional and ethical conduct
  • Discussion about challenges and successes in teaching
  • Reflecting on practice – strategies for improvement
