The Australian Technologies Competition awards celebrate high-tech companies with global potential

In summary

  • Swinburne spin-off company, Cortical Dynamics Ltd, recognised at the Australian Technologies Competition awards
  • The BAR monitor won in the Advanced Manufacturing category
  • Cortical Dynamics was also runner-up in the Medtech & Pharma category and the runner-up 2016 Australian Technology Company of the Year.

Swinburne spin-off company Cortical Dynamics Ltd has been recognised at the Australian Technologies Competition awards for their work in developing the Brain Anaesthesia Response (BAR) monitor.

The BAR monitor enables anaesthetists to measure the level of anaesthesia and make adjustments as necessary during surgical procedures to optimise patient safety and comfort.

Swinburne Professor David Liley, who worked on the development of the device and is a Non-Executive Director of Cortical Dynamics Ltd, says the BAR monitor is a milestone for the medical industry.

“Measuring how unconscious a patient is while they are under anaesthetic is particularly important, because if a patient is not completely unconscious they will remember the surgery, which can be quite a traumatic experience,” Professor Liley says.

The BAR monitor was awarded in the category of Advanced Manufacturing by the Australian Technologies Awards and Professor Liley is thrilled at the results of the awards as it is testimony to Swinburne’s commitment to advanced medical device development.

“It’s fantastic to be acknowledged by industry at the highest level and see Cortical Dynamics be nationally and globally recognised.”

Cortical Dynamics was also runner-up in the Medtech & Pharma category as well as being the runner-up 2016 Australian Technology Company of the Year.

Professor Liley hopes Cortical Dynamics will continue working with Swinburne and is currently negotiating for the company to join Swinburne’s Innovation Precinct.
