Design students in Vietnam

Swinburne University of Technology students have travelled to Vietnam to participate in a study tour, where they will explore the cultural and historic influences on design in Vietnam.

Meeting with the Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Hugh Borrowman, in Hanoi on Friday 16 January, the Bachelor of Design (Interior Architecture) students spent time sharing their stories and experiences with the Ambassador.

More than halfway through their tour already, the eight students, along with Tour leader and Swinburne Lecturer Dr Phuong Dinh, have undertaken a number of activities with local universities Hanoi University of Business & Technology and Ho Chi Minh University of Architecture. They also visited Vietnamese and international architecture and interior design practices.

Dr Dinh said that the tour had been a rich learning experience for all of those involved.

“Being able to bring the students to Vietnam has been amazing. Vietnam has a rich history, influenced by a number of other countries around the world, making it a great place to explore and study design.

“The students have been able to apply what has been learnt in their university classes, while learning more about the Vietnamese culture and language, through workshops and studios they have undertaken with local students.”

Swinburne University Vice President of International and Future Students, Jeffrey Smart, said that global mobility programs, such as this study tour, were one of the features of a Swinburne degree.

“Swinburne encourages all students to challenge themselves and develop new skills and global networks by participating in our study abroad programs.

“The University has a massive network of international partners around the world, from Europe, through the Middle East and Asia, and right throughout the Americas.”

Running from 5 January- 23 January, the students will visit sites including Halong Bay, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
