‌From the classroom to the catwalk, Swinburne students have been exposed to high end-fashion, recently collaborating with Australian owned sass & bide, to produce a series of promotional photos for the fashion label.

Using the skills they have learnt in their Diploma of Photo Imaging course, the Swinburne students were given the opportunity to photograph staff from the Prahran sass & bide store, wearing the label’s latest designer clothing collection.

According to Mark Boyle, the course leader, working on the photo shoot gave the students a taste of how the photography industry operates.

“This project has given the students an insight into how photo shoots work. They had to work with an art director and models, while also ensuring they met the brief that was given to them,” Mr Boyle said.

“These photos will go on to be used for sass & bide’s promotional and social media campaigns, so it’s a real project that the students are working on.

“And even better for the students, the photos can be used for their own photography folios. For them to have a big fashion label like sass & bide on their CV before they have even finished the course is huge.”

Running for a year, the Diploma of Photo Imaging course gives students comprehensive practical photography skills, while also training them on the operational, business side of photography, with subjects such as ‘Implementing e business solutions’ and ‘Providing services on a freelance basis’.

“The course has a strong industry and hands-on focus,” Mr Boyle said.

“Recently the students spent a day working in professional photographer Ian van der Wolde’s photo studio and shortly they will be working with NICA to produce a folio and calendar for them.

“All of these experiences will help them form networks and improve their employability upon completion of the course.”

The Diploma of Photo Imaging is based at Swinburne’s Wantirna campus and has a March and August intake. You can find out more information on the course and how to apply here
