Paper: Think Before You Print
Download a Think Before You Print Information Flyer (Doc 45kb)
Background
The introduction of personal computers was thought to herald the ‘paperless office’, but in fact office consumption of paper per person has increased significantly in recent years. The majority of Swinburne offices currently use non-recycled paper or paper without recycled content, much of which is made of woodchips sourced from Victorian native forests.
More than half of Victoria’s original forests have been cleared since European settlement, and those remaining are still being logged at a rate comparable in size to twenty football fields per day*. Much of this logging takes place in Melbourne’s own water catchment area, contributing to water quality degradation and biodiversity loss.
By using less paper, we can directly reduce the pressure on our native forests and slow down ecosystem degradation and habitat destruction.

Think About It...
Effluent from pulp and paper mills is a major pollutant of oceans and waterways. One family of pollutants released in mill effluent is toxic organochlorides. Organochlorides accumulate and concentrate in animal tissue and do not biodegrade.
