Recycling

Glass, Plastic & Cans

Follow these easy 3-steps -

1. Place a Green Bag (from the supermarket) or an old paper box at a collection point in your department. (Kitchens often work well).

2. Place a sign on it, so people know what its for. Try this one -
  bullet ‘Mixed recycling sign’

3. When the bag is full, empty the contents in an outdoor red wheelie bin. These are accessible at many locations around all campuses. At Prahran, look out for the wooden commingle bins outside the library/café area.

Note: the cleaners will not empty your recycling into recycling bins - its best to dispose of the recycling sometime after lunch - when most the rubbish is there, but the cleaners have not cleared out the bins yet.

That’s it!

Don’t forget to let your colleagues know when you put this system in place. Emails AND a notice at staff meetings about the new recycling system should do the trick. Some colleagues (including new staff members) may need reminding occasionally as well. .

Cartridges from Printers and Photocopiers

Swinburne uses Cart Collect for its toner cartridges. Cart Collect remanufactures the cartridges 3-4 times before they recycle them.

To have a collection box delivered to your department, order one through Office Max - the order number 1335049

To arrange collection of a full box, fill out the form at http://www.cartcollect.com.au/active/submit.asp

When selecting your ‘Reward Type’ select EFT. Swinburne has an arrangement with ATC that all revenue from providing these cartridges goes into a sustainability fund to support further initiatives.

Fluorescent Tubes (from lights)

If you find yourself with any spare fluoro tubes, just put in a work request to ‘collect fluoro tubes for recycling’. They will be taken to Croydon to be stored, picked up and then 100% recycled (including the mercury inside).
