Sustainability in the TAFE sector in Victoria

Purpose/Aim

To facilitate the uptake of sustainability in the TAFE workplace and encourage the incorporation of sustainability in teaching and learning disciplines.

Stakeholders/Partners

Funding partner – Office for Training and Tertiary Education (OTTE).

Participating TAFEs – Kangan Batman TAFE, South West TAFE, University of Ballarat (TAFE), Holmesglen TAFE and Swinburne University of Technology (TAFE).

Background

The project began in early 2006, with an initial life of 12 months to pilot and evaluate the developed program. It is born of the OTTE Innovation Fund in line with their Sustainability in the Workplace priority.

The idea was designed to contribute towards to government mandated 15% energy use reduction expected of government buildings (including TAFEs) by 2006.

The heavy focus on awareness raising and introduction to effective action on energy use reduction aimed to contribute towards future energy use reductions as well.

Project Status

The work was undertaken in three stages:

Stage 1 (1 January – March 2006)
The development of the course material, marketing and recruitment of interested TAFE Institutes for delivery in partnership with the NCS collaborators.

Stage 2 (March – October 2006)
The delivery of the program throughout metropolitan and regional TAFE institutes participating in the rollout of the workshops.

Stage 3 (October – November 2006)
This evaluation stage focused on the outcomes data collected, and included an analysis and evaluation of changes in the workplace as a result of the work undertaken.
