Development of National Sustainability Guideline Standards
Vision: “The project aims to build the capacity of the workforce for more sustainable work practices to enable more sustainable business systems, business practices and business thinking.”
The project ‘Knowledge and Skills for Sustainability' is an innovative nationwide project that aims to introduce the knowledge and principles of environmental sustainability and resource efficiency into all industry Training Packages. The first part of the project was to carry out national consultations for the creation of a set of three, nationally accredited, Guideline Standards for Environmental Sustainability.
These generic guideline units of competency will be able to be used as they are, or be customized for industry-specific training purposes. They will allow trainers and course developers to focus their efforts on the identification of industry specific skills and knowledge required, rather than having to spend too much time on the development of new competency standards.
Partners
 |
The partners for this project are Ecorecycle , Department of Environment and Conservation NSW, Australian National Training Authority, Melbourne Water, and the Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability. |
 |
A wide range of stakeholders from government, industry, Industry Skills Councils, ITABS, RTOs and environmental educators will be consulted during the drafting of the three standards for sustainability. |
Background Information
A need was recognised for a set of guideline ‘Sustainability Competency Standards' which could be readily picked up and used across industry. The intent of guideline units of competency is to avoid duplication of effort in developing multiple standards that deliver similar outcomes.
Once the three guideline standards are written and accepted, further work will be carried out to:
 |
assist in customisation of the standards for particular industry sectors |
 |
produce briefing materials for trainers and RTOs |
 |
provide some basic resource materials with guidance on content for use of the standards in training programs |
Expected Outcomes
It is expected that these three guideline standards for sustainability will be ‘noted' by National Training Qualifications Council to enable to continue on the practical work of adoption of the standards by specific training packages and their use in actual training programs.
Project Status
The project commenced in 2004 and the National Guideline Competency Standards for Sustainability were completed and ‘noted' on the 3rd of May, 2005 by the National Training Qualifications Council.
