Development of the EPA Ecological Footprint
Calculators
Purpose / Aim
The purpose of the project was to update
the existing EPA footprint calculators and to develop two ‘Event
and Conference’ calculators.
Stakeholders/Partners
The Victorian Environmental Protection
Agency and the Centre for Design at RMIT University.
Background
Throughout 2005 – 2006 the National
Centre for Sustainability worked with the Victorian Environmental
Protection Agency and the Centre for Design at RMIT to update and
improve the reporting features of the EPA Ecological Footprint Calculators.
The Household, Office and Schools calculators were all updated
with new land use intensity data through economic input / output
data. The two ‘Event and Conference’ calculators were
designed and developed using similar interfaces and reporting features
to the other suite of EPA footprint calculators.
The new footprint calculators calculate footprints through entering
consumption data. The calculators then generate a series of reports
for communication purposes. The new calculators also provide users
with a strategy based tool that allows them to view the footprint
reductions achieved through implementing a range of activities e.g.
purchasing renewable energy.
