Feasibility Study into the Establishment of a Sustainable Living Centre in the City of Greater Dandenong

Purpose/Aim of Project

This project was undertaken to determine whether a Community Environmental Centre should be built in the City of Greater Dandenong. This project intends to engage community, industry and government to support movement towards more environmentally practices. Education and research will be a main focus for the new Centre and it is anticipated that Swinburne University will be an integral part of the delivery of aspects of education and research in sustainability if the need for the new centre is established.

Stakeholders/Partners

The National Centre for Sustainability at Swinburne University and the City of Greater Dandenong are working together on this feasibility study. Swinburne’s role in this partnership will be to identify potential community and industry needs and develop options to fulfill these needs.

Background Information

The city of Greater Dandenong commissioned the project as part of the 2004/05 business plan to see if it feasible to construct and run a Community Environment/Cultural Centre to increase engagement with the community and local industry. The council would like to investigate the environmental issues which are important to the community and establish if there is a role for a centre in the area.

Expected Outcomes

Once local community and industry needs are determined both the National Centre for Sustainability and City of Greater Dandenong will assess the viability of building a Community Environmental Centre. A final report will be presented to the council in November 2005. The report will contain the outcome of the feasibility study, the current state of analysis (other examples of environmental /cultural centres around the world) and clear recommendations around the technical and financial feasibility of such a Centre.
