Purpose/Aim
of project
This project aims to work with households
across the City of Boroondara to work towards living more sustainability
at home. The council will work closely with the community to encourage
environmentally preferred behaviours within Boroondara including:
 |
Sustainable gardening/biodiversity |
|
 |
Water conservation and stormwater
management |
 |
Improving community engagement |
 |
Decreasing use of car (non hybrid)
transport |
 |
Reducing production of waste |
 |
Increasing the use of products
made from recycled or non toxic materials |
 |
Reducing the use of natural resources - eg. energy |
The project seeks to find the most effective
means to inspire long-term behavioural change within the Boroondara
community.
Stakeholders/Partners
Partnering the National Centre for Sustainability is the City of
Boroondara, who is taking a lead role in the management and administration
of the project. Origin Energy is also providing specialized information,
energy audits, guest speakers for community workshops and marketing.
Background
This project was first commissioned in January 2004 when the Boroondara
Council applied for a “Community Action Fund” through
the Victorian Greenhouse Strategy. The council wished to support
existing social “champions” such as scout leaders and
the Rotary Club to inspire long term environmental behavioral change.
The City of Boroondara held six free workshops monthly from February
to July in 2005. These workshops provided information on different
themes of sustainability:
