Swinburne seals the deal on sustainability
October 2005
Swinburne’s National Centre for Sustainability
(NCS) is signing what is believed to be the first university sustainability
covenant in Australia. This voluntary agreement between Swinburne
University and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) will
be signed on 10 October at the Hawthorn campus.
Manager of the NCS Linda Condon said that “in order for universities
to lead society to a sustainable future they must ensure sustainability
is a mainstream activity, involving each and every aspect of the
University. This covenant commits us to do just that by integrating
environmental, social and economic principles into all organisational
decisions and activities across its six campuses.
“The covenant will be the driving force for ‘education
for sustainability’ throughout the University and will ensure
that responsibility is taken for preparing many of tomorrows leaders
and decision-makers to play an important role in building a sustainable
future.
“Sustainability will continue to be incorporated into teaching
and learning, research, engaging with industry and community, and
developing a workplace for sustainability, said Linda.”
Swinburne has implemented a number of key sustainability initiatives,
including the Green Office Program and student sustainability projects
and research.
