Solar House Day

August 2005

Solar House Day 10/11th September 2005 (Energy Efficient Homes on Display 11am – 4pm)

“Solar House Day demonstrates how simple it is to build or renovate a home that requires virtually no heating or cooling other then that provided freely by the sun and our environment”
Mahalath Halperin ANZSES Chair

If you are thinking of building a new home, renovating an existing one, or simply considering your options, come and learn how to improve the liveability and efficiency of your house to make it more energy-efficient, healthy and naturally comfortable all year ‘round.

Over one hundred homes featuring passive and active solar design elements will open their doors across Australia and New Zealand during Solar House Day on September 11th to help raise community and national awareness of the importance of good residential design.

Organised by the Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society (ANZSES) with continued support from the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO), Solar House Day offers the opportunity to explore actual solar homes to gain insight into the effectiveness, comfort and economic efficiencies of responsible design.

A house that is passive solar in design requires less energy to warm and cool and is therefore less harmful to our environment – it is that simple. Basic design, climatic response, water re-use and recycling, standby power, lighting, transport, grey-water and waste are all areas where we can make substantial energy and dollar savings.

Passive solar design features being promoted during Solar House Day include solar orientation or ‘siting’ of the house on the block to exploit the light and heat freely provided by the sun.

The appropriate application of insulation, thermal mass, glazing, natural ventilation and solar shading will be displayed and explained. Active solar measures, such as solar electricity, solar hot water and the effective use of rain water tanks will also be illustrated and explained – including details of generous government rebate schemes that help with installation and running costs.

Ms Mahalath Halperin, ANZSES Chair, said that this years Solar House Day would be of significant importance to the Australian public ‘Due to the current climatic circumstances and the importance of responsible water management in and around the home, this years Solar House Day will feature a greater concentration of homes displaying water management and water saving ideas and techniques then in previous years. This along with the continued improvement in energy saving development and technics will ensure Solar House Day 2005 will be the most relevant, practical and successful ever.’

Tickets can be purchased on the day from the first house visited which will then allow access to all other Solar House Day venues. Visitors will receive a comprehensive Info Kit packed with material explaining all the features they see. They will meet with architects, designers, owners and householders to get a first-hand account of how to build a water wise and energy saving home.
