Successful Stormwater and Urban Water Conservation Grant

May 2005

Swinburne will be an important partner with Frankston City Council (FCC) and the South East Water in the recently announced project grant of $250,000. $1 million of seed funding has been committed to the project by FCC on the basis of a similar commitment from the State Government.

The project will save up to 200 megalitres of potable water and save the community approximately $150,000 per annum in water costs.

Technical aspects of the project design have involved the Infrastructure Services Management Group (ISMG) of the Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Science and the National Centre for Sustainability (NCS). Project facilitation and support was provided by the Office of Industry Liaison.

The project involves the laying of major water pipe infrastructure to enable the safe use of treated water from the South Eastern Outfall on public parks and recreational facilities.

The ISMG will bring to the Ballam Project, independent, scientific monitoring and analysis of soil conditions and the development of a Smart Irrigation Scheduling System for the safe and efficient use of recycled water for the irrigation of Ballam Park.

The NCS will lead a community consultation and education initiative as an integral part of the project.

Swinburne will be contracted by the Frankston City Council for these 2 significant aspects of the project.
