Rice Cultivation in Indonesia

Through the development of terrace cultivation techniques and community cooperation, Indonesia has been proudly growing rice sustainably over thousands of years. However, the 1970s saw the introduction of modern farming methods and mainstream agricultural models. Modern cultivation techniques have seen the introduction of hybrid seeds and a number of herbicides and pesticides.

A series of interviews were conducted with farmers in Bali and East Java on the issue of modern cultivation techniques compared to their recollections prior to the 1970s.
