My grandfather was born in Scotland on the 2nd of September 1936. He left Scotland in the 1950s on a big cargo ship when he was only 14 years old.
When my Pa was my age he used to walk to and from school, as there weren’t many cars back then. Most kids went to school by horse or bikes or they walked.
Goods were delivered by trucks to the grocery stores. Then the workers delivered them to people’s houses by horse and cart. Coal was used to run trains and big old trucks.
The first cars looked like a horse carriage with a motor with only one gear. In time they became similar to today’s cars, better, faster, and much more comfortable.
My Pa’s first car was called a Hillman which he bought for around about 990 pounds, which is around $2000 dollars.
Transport and travel has changed in many ways. All modes of travel have been improved over the years. Aeroplanes have changed a lot. They used to only have propellers and were much smaller and needed to stop many times to re-fuel during their journey. Now they are powered by big jet engines and are able to fly a lot longer without stopping. They can also carry more people.
Today’s life is much faster due to better roads and bigger and better transport. My pa said that life today has come along way for the better. However with the price of oil and petrol at the moment, we may end up back in the olden days.
