When I was younger we use to call Lake Burrumbeet, Ballarat’s beach. We always skied across the lake and if you had a boat, you would go there for the whole day and just relax and have fun on the water. Now, in the last few years all the lakes; Lake Wendouree, Learmonth, Burrumbeet, have all dried up.
In 1967 there was a drought and in the early 70’s we achieved low rainfall but now in the last 12 years, the rainfall is again well under average. All the creeks around town would be over flowing, flooding at this time of the year but now the creeks don’t even run. In winter there would be a decent snow fall, it would always rain and be very cold! Spring and autumn were always wet and also cold and summer was never so hot either. When we would go on holidays and meet new people, they would always say “Ballarat… that cold town!” Now when they ask about the weather, we can only tell them that it’s never wet and cold like it use to be.
