One of the greatest challenges we face in the future is the ability to manage our resources and meet the needs of a growing world population.

Education will shape the world of tomorrow — it is the most effective means that society possesses for confronting the challenges of the future and is the primary agent of transformation to move to a more sustainable world.

Education for sustainability is an emerging but dynamic concept that encompasses a new vision of education that seeks to “empower people of all ages to assume responsibility for creating a sustainable future

There is a need to refocus many existing education policies, programs and practices so that they build the concepts, skills, motivation and commitment needed for sustainable development.

Lifelong learning, including adult and community education, appropriate technical and vocational education, higher education and teacher education are all vital ingredients of capacity building for a sustainable future.”

(UNESCO (1997) Environment and Society: Education and public awareness for sustainability, BackgroundPaper prepared for UNESCO International Conference, Thessaloniki, 7.)

This set of resources will assist educators to integrate the concepts of sustainability into their teaching programs and will encourage the participation of students and learners to move to more sustainable ways of living and working.
