World Enviroment Day 2008

C02-Kick the Habit
What is Swinburne doing?
Swinburne is constantly looking at ways to reduce its greenhouse impact. Some of its initiatives include:
  • Installing highly efficient T5 light bulbs in new buildings
  • Investing in sustainability features in new major works (including the National Centre for Sustainability building at Wantirna and the soon to be commenced Advanced Technology building on Hawthorn campus).
  • Retrofitting high energy consuming technology with more efficient ones when it comes time. For example, the installation of a new heat wheel in the BA building (Hawthorn) has resulted in a significant energy saving of 18-20% of the previous heating/cooling system.
  • Developing and implementing increasingly sophisticated Building Management Systems to minimise the energy use of any building. This includes - continuous maintenance (and retrofitting, if appropriate) of the HVAC (heating and cooing) systems - one of the biggest energy consumers in any building.
  • Always looking for opportunities to utilise natural light and air flow through the buildings, for human health as well as energy conservation.
  • Changing the Fleet Vehicles policy to allow and encourage the purchase of hybrid or 4-cylinder vehicles.
How can I contribute?
We're always looking to take suggestions from the people using the buildings (you!) as to what can be done. Tell us:
  • a) about what you do at work (or at home) to save energy.
  • b) what you'd like to see Swinburne do more.
