Green skills within the Australian Transport and Logistics Training Package

Completion Jan 2010

The National Centre for Sustainability and the Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council (TLISC) were funded by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) to research the development and implementation of additional environmental and sustainability units of competency in the Transport & Logistics (Road Transport and Warehousing) Training Package (TLI07) – Cert 1 to Cert IV. Extensive industry consultation and desktop research was undertaken to inform results. Research indicated broad anticipation by the industry that climate change and government policies and regulations will impact heavily on the sector, and that all workers at all levels should have sustainability knowledge and skills embedded in their training.

Swinburne University of Technology: TAFE’s Grand Green Plan

Completion 2010

A system level plan to provide the critical strategic infrastructure and institutional capability to enable Swinburne to be a leading green TAFE in Australia. This includes a collaborative approach to identifying green skill gaps and integrating sustainability and green skills into courses across the Schools; a green course certification process and a new “teaching in sustainability” course.

NSW Energy Efficiency Training Audit

Completion Dec 2009

This will be the first Australian project to develop capability in modelling the education and skill demands of climate change initiatives. The project includes research into training uptake and needs in NSW for the energy efficiency training for trades and professionals program 2009 – 2013. The project will review the uptake or demand side of energy efficiency / renewable energy education and training as well as the barriers to uptake across business and industry in NSW. Funding provided by NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change.

It is being carried out in partnership with the CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems, including a project using stocks and flows methodology to model the demand and supply of energy efficiency skills on a regional basis.

Victoria Tertiary Education Strategic Action Plan for Sustainability

Completion Dec 2009

The development of a strategic plan for re-orienting the Victorian Tertiary Education sector (VET and Higher Ed) to education for sustainability and climate change adaptation and mitigation knowledge and skills. The project will facilitate collaboration in policy, course and resources development required to develop sustainability literacy in all Victorian graduates.

National Taskforce for Trades and Professions in Energy Efficiency

Completion June 2009

Research funded by Sustainability Victoria and the National Framework for Energy Efficiency aimed at reviewing the Australian trades and professions that

  • have an impact on energy efficiency
  • the actions they influence and
  • the estimated potential impact of those actions on energy efficiency.

Training Gap Analysis for Home Sustainability Assessors

Completion 2008

A study to assess the Course in Home Sustainability Assessment (21854VIC) against current industry needs, particularly in light of emerging Commonwealth legislation (Green Loans). The analysis of data collected from industry practitioners revealed an extreme diversity in almost all aspects of current industry practice, reinforcing the need for training to provide the requisite knowledge and skills for a Home Sustainability Assessor to perform a complete and thorough assessment of a residence and its environs. Funding provided by Sustainability Victoria.

Feasibility of an Industry Led Accreditation System for the Energy Service Sector

Completion 2008

The purpose of the project was to provide advice on the feasibility of the energy services industry establishing an industry-led accreditation system, and to devise guidelines for its establishment. Analysis of data reflected the complexity of the sector and a range of potential barriers, including the need for the mapping and categorisation of the knowledge and skills inherent in the sector as a precursor to accreditation (NFEE has since commissioned this study). The criteria by which practitioners should gain accreditation were determined, along with two potential accreditation models for consideration.

Qualitative and quantitative research and recommendations on the guideline standards for the National Framework for Energy Efficiency (NFEE) through the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism.
