Principles of Sustainability

Professor Frank Fisher

Frank is committed to social transformation to a more sensitive self-aware world. He has worked in the area of environmental education for three decades, much of that time as Associate Professor in the School of Geography and Environmental Science at Monash University in Melbourne. He uses the insights he has gained to transform his own life which, in addition striving for sustainable practice, has included learning to live positively, with a life threatening condition.

Frank has published numerous papers on context education and specifically, on the social contexts of health, transport and energy. A selection of these has (2006) been published as a book by Vista Publications called "Response Ability: Environment, Health & Everyday Transcendence".

Anthony James

Anthony James is a writer, musician, small business manager and sustainability advocate. He argues that the most effective approach to sustainability is through personal and cultural development, more than technological development. His perspectives have developed in working within a range of industries (including education, health, music, media, construction, retail and fashion) in both the public and private sectors, particularly in Australiaand Central America. Anthony lives with his partner in Melbourne, and also works with CERES in Brunswick East. His qualifications include a Masters of International and Community Development, Graduate Certificate in Sustainability, and Bachelor of Business Systems. He has been a commuter cyclist for over 10 years.

Implementing Sustainability

Murali Neelamegam

Murali is a dynamic transformational strategist specialising in leadership and management development, organisational development, cross-cultural and diversity management. As a qualified and experienced business psychologist, his primary focus is on personal, group and organisational transformation. Before moving into consulting he was responsible for developing and implementing Change Management and Cross Cultural Management projects for one of Australia’s major telecommunication organisations. His consulting assignments have also taken him to Asia, Europe and North America.

He is a strong advocate for developing conditions that allow people the greatest opportunity to excel and contribute creatively. He also coaches senior executives from diverse cultures to strive for and achieve professional excellence.

Towards Integrated Land and Water Management

Dr Chantelle Sinclair

Chantelle completed a PhD in Dryland Salinity at the Centre for Environmental Stress and Adaptation Research (CESAR) in 2003. Since then, she has been passionately involved in the field of sustainability, working as a consultant and researcher for a wide variety of groups and projects including:

  • Residential developments aiming for carbon neutral status (requiring energy efficient techniques and appliances, renewable energy sources and a local carbon emissions sequestration/offset revegetation program).
  • A sustainability analysis of single use cup options. An assessment of the environmental impact of all disposable cups commercially available in Australia and their relative environmental impacts (energy, water, atmospheric and waterborne emissions and solid wastes).
  • Water management projects for developments, including water saving techniques, as well as innovations such as grey and black water treatment for re-use in non-potable uses (e.g. toilet flushing and snow making facilities).
  • The EcoRecycle “Waste Wise Business Program”, uncovering industry case studies that demonstrate triple bottom line success stories.

Chantelle enjoys educating and inspiring those around her to see the social, economic and environmental benefits of living sustainably.

Global Citizenship: Corporate and Community Sustainability

Jose Ramos

Originally from California of Mexican and Native American ancestry, Jose M. Ramos has worked broadly across a number of areas to bring greater foresight and innovation capacity into communities, organisations and the world.

Through an action learning approach he helps to facilitate critical enquiry and action into questions of sustainability, governance , and cultural transformation. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature from the University of California at Irvine, and a Master of Science in Strategic Foresight from Swinburne University of Technology. Jose has conducted research and published widely in the areas of sustainable futures, cultural change, and social alternatives, as well as co-producing various community oriented documentaries and media productions. Professional areas include linking action research and futures enquiry, the empowerment of community in the face of 21st century challenges, the use of media in the communication of long term foresight, and facilitating participatory processes to create sustainability oriented innovations, projects and social enterprise. He is currently undertaking a doctorate focused on the exploration of Alternative Futures of Globalisation.

Eco-Design

Judith Glover

Judith Glover is currently a lecturer at the Faculty of Design, Swinburne University in Industrial Design and Product Design Engineering, specializing in Environmental Design and Sustainability. She holds a Bachelor of Industrial Design and a Bachelor of Visual Arts. She is currently completing her Masters by Design Research and also runs her own small manufacturing company specializing in women’s sexual health products.
