Dr Paul Stoddart wins Victoria Fellowship award. This evening at a gala event in Government House, Dr Paul Stoddart of the Centre for Atom Optics and Ultrafast Spectroscopy was amonst the six winners of a prestigious Victoria Fellowship. Our hearty congratulations go to Dr Stoddart who won an award for his work in laser-based technology. The prize includes a travel grant of $18,000 to further the winner's research and is intended to benefit scientists and engineers in the early stages of their careers.

Dr Cameron Jones presented the paper From Biosensors to Product Design Engineering: Molecular Computing and Digital Encryption at the 17th IMACS World Congress - Scientific Computation, Applied Mathematics and Simulation in Paris, France held from July 11-15, 2005.

Swinburne University will be presenting some of its nanotechnology research as well as hosting a number of forums at Austech 2005, Australia's premier manufacturing technology exhibition, to be held from 10-13 May 2005 in the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. This expo is running under the banner of National Manufacturing Week, which combines several exhibitions under the one roof. Dr Paul Stoddart has been awarded a DART grant from Diabetes Australia - Victoria, to continue research on the implatable glucose sensor being developed at the Centre for Imaging and Applied Optics.

Dr Paul Stoddart and the team at the Centre for Imaging and Applied Optics have entered into an agreement with BioPharmica Limited to develop a SERS based fibre optic probe to be used in biosensors for diagnostic testing and drug development. The agreement was announced to the Australian Stock Exchange this morning. For more information about the SERS fibres, see the August 2004 'Research in Focus'. The State Library received grant funding to assemble a panel of composers to discuss the role of science in music composition as part of National Science Week. The main focus of this will be the work of Cameron Jones. The title of the keynote address by Cameron Jones is 'Nanotechnology and Molecular Scale Music Composition' National Science Week, Experimedia, State Library of Victoria.
