Learning and Teaching at Swinburne

Learning and Teaching Policies and Planning

Higher Education

The Swinburne Model for Professional Learning combines Swinburne’s teaching, research and industry-based learning expertise to offer coursework programs which provide clear professional outcomes for students within a supportive real world learning environment. Based on an underlying constructivist approach to learning & teaching, Higher Education curriculum design and delivery is focused on:

  • Real World Learning, where an experiential approach to learning is set in an international context informed by educational scholarship, industry input and research expertise, equipping graduates for mainstream and entrepreneurial career paths as independent, lifelong learners with an understanding of social and environmental contexts
  • Student Centred Learning, providing orientation and transition support to incoming students from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures, offering flexibility and choice plus opportunities for accelerated and intersectoral study, together with an emphasis on providing professional outcomes and career skills within a quality-assured teaching framework which includes a comprehensive mix of face-to-face and online resources and support

The six Faculties of the Higher Education sector are jointly undertaking the Curriculum Framework Project, a five year progressive implementation of curriculum renewal commenced in 2005 in order to achieve a compelling and distinctive vision of Professional Learning for undergraduate studies at Swinburne. At postgraduate coursework level Swinburne is working to provide new flexible program offerings with an increasing emphasis on cross-disciplinary opportunities and international recognition. At both undergraduate and postgraduate coursework levels and in close collaboration with Swinburne’s Sarawak Campus, Swinburne is strengthening the support it provides for learners and teachers and its quality assurance and improvement framework for teaching programs.
