Learning and Teaching Plan
The Learning and Teaching Strategic plan is embedded in each major planning document for the Higher Education Sector at Swinburne University.
Professional development for staff
Professional development activities in learning and teaching are provided for sessional, part-time and full-time academic staff. These include provision of the formal award programs: the Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education; and the Professional Certificate in Teaching Practice (Higher Education). In addition informal professional development activities are provided including induction programs for new and sessional staff and online support.
Effectiveness as a teacher and student evaluations inform our promotion and probation
Probation and promotion practices and policies for academics staff include effectiveness as a teacher. Probation guidelines state that a staff member who is new to teaching will be required to undertake the first subject of the Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education OR the Professional Certificate in Teaching Practice. Staff with teaching responsibility are required to demonstrate effectiveness as a teacher during their probationary period. This is evidenced by student evaluations and other documentation such as peer review, completion of professional development required by the Dean and reflection on practice. Promotion guidelines provide that submissions for promotion must address all three categories of academic work: Teaching, Scholarship and Service. At least two of these categories must be supported by a detailed portfolio that details specific performance and achievement. Achievement in the scholarship of teaching must be demonstrated by excellence, as validated by internal and particularly external independent evaluation. This includes, but is not limited to, subject and course evaluation; effective teaching strategies; leadership roles and involvement in curriculum development; course design and publication in the relevant literature on teaching and curriculum development.
