Novell

How do I set up a Novell Network account?

  1. To create your Novell Network account, fill in the Network account form. You can use this form to set up your Novell, Groupwise and OPAX accounts by ticking all three boxes.
  2. Return your signed, completed form which has also been authorised by your Head of Department to:

    TopITS Helpdesk, Internal Mail H37 or Facsimile: 9214 5406.

OPAX

An OPAX user ID and password is required for accessing certain systems such as the library databases, computer network drives and web mail.

How do I set up an OPAX account?

  1. To create your OPAX account, fill in the Network account form.
  2. Return your signed, completed form which has also been authorised by your Head of Department to:

GroupWise

GroupWise is a program that combines email and calendaring. It is the standard email system for Swinburne University and is used for communication with your students and peers. You can access your Groupwise email messages via a secure connection from on campus or at home.

How do I set up an Groupwise account?

  1. To create your GroupWise account, fill in the Network account form.
  2. Return your signed, completed form which has also been authorised by your Head of Department to:

Enabling off-campus access to Groupwise via the web

To initialize your groupwise access for external use via the web, you need to first logon on to a staff computer at Swinburne (not a student lab machine)

  • using your Novell logon (initialsurname) as your ID, and your password (already supplied to you by ITS)
  • click on the Groupwise Icon - this will automatically open up your email
  • Click on Tools> Options (see below)

Click on Security this will open up a dialogue box named: Security Options, where you can put in your password and then confirm it. You will not need this usually on campus if you use a staff machine, but you will if you use the web to access Groupwise either in a student laboratory, or off campus via the web.

Blackboard

Blackboard is a learning management system (LMS) that allows academics to engage learners and facilitate class activities through a series of specially designed web pages. Blackboard features include threaded discussion forums, lodging of student assignments, online gradebook, document sharing and e-mail messaging.

How do I get access to Blackboard?

If you are a sessional staff member you need to get the convenor of your subject to send an email to Blackboard@swin.edu.au requesting a Blackboard account for you. They must supply the helpdesk with your first name, last name and a valid email address.

If you are a convenor contact the Blackboard helpdesk directly by emailing Blackboard@swin.edu.au or phoning ext. 5295. The helpdesk will set you up with a Blackboard account.

Maintaining your IT account

The access of staff, including sessionals, to IT accounts terminates when employment at Swinburne ceases. In some cases access may be disconnected between two periods of sessional employment. If you wish to check your IT account status or request continued access contact the ITS Helpdesk on 9214 5000 or at helpdesk@swin.edu.au.

Staff card

Your Swinburne staff card doubles as your library card. Note that only staff paid directly by Swinburne can obtain a staff photo ID card.

How do I get a staff card?

To obtain a staff ID card:

  1. Complete a Swinburne Staff ID Card Application form.
  2. Take, or fax, this form to the Human Resources administration ( Hawthorn Campus , AD208, Mail Number: H14) . Human Resources will issue you with an ID number attached to the Application form.
  3. Take the Application form and ID number to any camera point ( Student information centre at your campus) and a photo ID card will be issued.
