Learning & Teaching Good Practice Database

Flying to Academic Heights

Teaching in the performance arts requires the development of student’s artistic and technical achievements through active learning approaches involving collaborative discussion and provision of feedback that offers suggestions for artistic expression and technique. Expertise in demonstrating understanding and empathy of students’ abilities in a safe, supportive and encouraging learning environment is paramount.

NICA teachers use practice-based learning and teaching approaches and models of apprenticeship inherent to performance experiences. They facilitate students’ creative process through a variety of mentoring, guiding and supporting strategies necessary to inspire students to accomplish performances in their chosen specialty to attempt to reach heights not yet achieved or experienced before.

The teaching role moves through stages of developing mastery of skills and modelling techniques, to inspiring students in the transition from dependent learners to independent performers in the NICA 3rd year performance showcase.
