Biography
Mike is a clinical psychologist who has a long history of commitment to teaching, research and clinical practice. Following 15 years at the University of Melbourne where he was convenor of postgraduate professional training and director of the Psychology Trainee Clinic, Mike has recently moved to Swinburne while maintaining an honorary position at the University of Melbourne.
In addition to the university sector, Mike has worked in general hospital, psychiatric, rehabilitation, primary care and private practice settings. In the past, through his clinical affiliations, He has been instrumental in developing postgraduate psychology training programs, training programs for general practitioners and mental health workers, and psychological treatment programs in metropolitan and rural settings. He has also established strong links with community support organisations for individuals with anxiety disorders and their carers, as well as with professional groups (e.g., Australian Psychological Society, Australian Association of Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy, European Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies, Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy).
Mike is the current National Chair of the Australian Psychological Society's College of Clinical Psychologists, and sits on various professional committees.

Other Projects
Mike is involved with The Obsessive Compulsive Cognitions Working Group (OCCWG). The OCCWG comprises the world’s foremost OCD researchers. Mike is an inaugural member of this group, and sit on its Central Committee which drives and coordinates the activities and publications of the larger group. Mike is involved with The Australian and New Zealand OCD Research Alliance (ANZOCDRA). Mike is an inaugural member of ANZOCDRA which comprises Australasia’s foremost OCD researchers. Mike is involved with The DIAMOND Consortium (Diagnosis, Management and Outcomes of Depression in Primary Care). Mike is an inaugural member of the DIAMOND Consortium, a multidisciplinary team comprising members with extensive experience in the clinical management of depression and mental health policy development and promotion. The DIAMOND group has attracted considerable research funding for the investigation of depression outcomes in primary care. Findings from the DIAMOND study will enable policy makers, planners and service providers to take account of the prognostic factors related particularly to the interactions between systems of care, primary care practitioners, and patients, thus facilitating improved means of diagnosis, management and outcomes of depression in Australian primary care. Mike is involved with The PANORAMIC Consortium (Psychological ANd Other Responses Associated with Medical Illnesses Consortium). MIke is an inaugural member of the PANORAMIC Consortium which was created out of initiatives to drive the relationship between experts in the health and mental health areas. Key consortium members include: University of Melbourne Departments of Psychology, Psychiatry, Public Health, Endocrinology, Cardiology, Oncology; National Heart Foundation (NHF); National Cancer Control Initiative; Diabetes Australia (DA); Greater Green Triangle University Department of Rural Health (Flinders and Deakin Universities); Melbourne Health and North-West Mental Health Program; Baker Institute; National Vascular Disease Prevention Alliance; and the Diabetes Alliance Group. Mike is involved with The Self and its Disorders Network (Humanistic, Psychiatric, and Neural Perspectives). Mike is a member of this group, led by Ian Gold (Monash University), which aims to bring together researchers from the humanities and the sciences of the mind to investigate what mental disorder can reveal about the nature of the self, and what humanistic approaches to the self can contribute to its scientific study.
Consultant Activities
Mike is currently a consultant on a 4-year study on the psychopathology of compulsive hoarding funded by the National Institute of Mental Health in the USA. Since arriving at Swinburne, a larger group of psychologists have successfully tended for a large study evaluating a community-based prevention and early intervention program for Type 2 diabetes. Mike was also a consultant on the tender evaluating the Better Outcomes in Mental Health Care initiative for the federal Department of Health and Ageing.
