Science for the next generation
Swinburne’s Bachelor of Science is a broad science degree that offers industry-relevant experience in the effective use of technology, handling of information, laboratory conditions and communications. The degree also offers specialised education in at least one area of scientific study.
Graduates will have a wide range of career opportunities in science and technology, determined by their choice of major studies.
Depending on your study choices you find opportunities in:
Biochemistry and chemistry
Medical, environmental or biomolecular research; Clinical and agricultural biochemistry; Biotechnology; Microbiology; Food or beverage production, fermentation technology, wine science; Pharmaceutical production; Protein engineering; Waste treatment, biodegradation, bioremediation; Sales, marketing, business analysis and management in the biochemical/chemical industries.
Biomedical Sciences
Advanced biomedical research, Human factors research, Sports science research, Biomedical instrumentation, Clinical departments such as neurology, cardiology, respirator function
Public and environmental health
Employment may be found with commonwealth, state, and local government authorities, and increasingly, food waste and management industries and private consultancies. Upon graduation you may become an environmental health officer, or obtain a position in policy development, health promotion, communicable disease investigation, sustainability or public and community health planning. Graduates may also work with overseas health agencies, particularly in the area of disaster management.
Biotechnology
Upon graduation you may find employment in the medical, health, agricultural
and environmental industries in the areas of biochemistry and biotechnology.
You will have the opportunity to play a leading, innovative role in biotechnology,
particularly if you combine your degree with business or media.
Computer Science
Students undertaking Computer Science will be well prepared for a career in areas such as programming, system administration, software development, Internet systems development, scientific computing and database development and design
Industry-Based Learning (IBL)
Why wait until you have finished university to get a great job? Giving students a foot in the workforce door with valued industry experience is a key part of Swinburne’s Industry Based Learning program. IBL gives you a chance to combine your degree with meaningful, paid work in your chosen field for 6 or 12 months.
