Faculty Grant Schemes

The Postgraduate Conference Scheme

The Postgraduate Conference Scheme is designed to support conference attendance among postgraduate research students in the Faculty, as part of providing a high-quality postgraduate experience.

Students can claim up to $300 for conferences where registration is equal to, or less than, this amount. Where registration is more than $300, students can claim the cost of registration up to $800. All money must be spent within the year it is allocated.

Applications will be judged on a competitive basis by the Faculty Research Committee. Criteria will include:

  • The relevance of the proposed conference to the thesis currently being undertaken
  • Whether the student is delivering a paper at the conference (especially a refereed paper)
  • Whether the conference will contribute to refereed publications over and above the thesis

The following conditions apply to all applications:

  • Students must be currently enrolled, or have completed their thesis within the previous twelve months and maintained an on-going research relationship with the Faculty;
  • Students must have completed a Progress Review for the previous year, if applicable;
  • It is expected that all applications will be read and corrected by the supervisor before submission however, students must complete their applications personally;
  • All applications must be supported by their supervisor;
  • All applications must be accompanied by a brief CV;
  • No more than one successful application is permitted in any one year; and
  • The applicant must be identified as a Swinburne University of Technology postgraduate student.

The following conditions apply to particular categories of students, depending upon the length of candidature:

  • Students who have completed more than one year and less than three years of their PhD (or more than one year and less than two years of their DPsych or Masters) are expected to have submitted a paper or poster;
  • Students who have completed more than three years of their PhD (or more than two years of their DPsych or Masters) are expected to present a paper or poster as a condition of financial support from the Scheme. In the event that a paper or poster are not accepted by the conference organisers, an application should be withdrawn immediately;
  • In special circumstances, students may apply for support where the above conditions are not met; for example, keynote addresses by eminent experts or workshops specific to the student's work. Such applications must be supported by strong evidence, and would receive close scrutiny.

The following criteria will apply in the assessment of all applications:

  • For students in the first year of their research degree, those who have submitted a paper or poster will be prioritised over those who have not;
  • For students who have completed less than three years of their PhD (or les than two years of their DPsych or Masters), those students whose paper or poster has been accepted will be prioritised over those whose presentation has not been accepted;
  • Current students will be prioritised over students who have completed their thesis; and
  • All other things being equal, applications by students who have not previously been supported by the Scheme will be prioritised over applications by students who have had support.
