HASM205/305 Cultural Study Tour Information Briefing

In Winter Term this year, the Faculty of Life and Social Sciences hosted its first study tour - HASM205/305 Cultural Study Tour. Given the success of the 2008 program, we are pleased to announce that we are planning to offer this unit again in 2009. The overseas part of the program will be hosted again this year at Swinburnes Malaysian Campus in the city of Kuching, Sarawak.

HASM205/305 Cultural Study Tour provides students with an opportunity to gain valuable insight into a range of cultural issues through direct exposure and formal reflection. Students are introduced to key concepts in intercultural communication and key techniques of auto-ethnography as a means of structuring their learning. The learnings derived from this experience are of benefit to students across the university regardless of their primary discipline area or chosen career paths.

Interested students and their parents are invited to attend the first of two information evenings (the second will be held early in 2009):

Event Program:
6:00pm arrival
6:15 - 7:00 formal information session
7:00 - 7:30 light refreshments

Where: EN213

The session will begin with a 45 minute presentation followed by light refreshments and informal discussion (until 7:30). The event will be hosted by the Faculty of Life and Social Sciences. Dr. Paula Geldens and Dr. Mark Finn who will be coordinating and teaching the study tour again in 2009 will be coordinating the information evening. The event is designed to give interested parties an overview of the program and will cover topics such as: an overview of the benefits of intercultural experience, location details, unit structure and proposed assessment, program costs and scholarship opportunities.

We will begin compiling a list of students who have expressed interest in this unit at this session - so please do come along if you are thinking about applying for entry into this unit in 2009.
