Professor Tom Spurling appointed a Member of the Order of Australia>

1Professor Tom Spurling has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Professor Spurling received the prestigious honour for service to chemical science through contributions to national innovation policies, strategies and research and to the development of professional scientific relationships within the Asian region. (Citation)

Professor Spurling has nearly 40 years experience in scientific research including 33 years at CSIRO where his roles included Assistant Chief, CSIRO Division of Applied Organic Chemistry; Chief Research Scientist and Manager, Policy and Planning, CSIRO Institute of Industrial Technologies; Acting Director, CSIRO Institute of Industrial Technologies and Chief, CSIRO Molecular Science.

In 2002, Professor Spurling took up the position of Director of the Industrial Research Institute at Swinburne (IRIS), and is currently the CEO of CRC Wood Innovations and Professor of Molecular Science at Swinburne.

He has previously received awards for his scientific studies in 1971, 1994 and 2000 and received the Centenary Medal in 2001.
