PHD TRAINING SCHOLARSHIPS
NICM Collaborative Centre for the Study of Natural Medicines and Neurocognition in Health and Disease
The NICM Collaborative Centre for the Study of Natural medicines and Neurocognition in Health and Disease
is conducting clinical trials examining the effects of natural medicines on memory, cognition and brain
functioning in healthy participants and in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Mechanisms of action of
pharmacologically active herbs will be examined by complementing assessment of cognitive change with
other measures including, functional neuroimaging and physiological measures.
Two PhD scholarships are offered in the area of nutritional and herbal medicine. Applicants are
sought with a strong background in psychology, psychophysiology, neuropsychology or related fields.
Nutritional Medicine
- Study 1: Fish oil supplementation in an ageing Australian population using Wild Atlantic Salmon Fish Oil
- Study 2: Effects of multivitamins and CoQ10 on cardiovascular function and brain health
Herbal Medicine
- Study 3: Efficacy and safety of Ayurvedic medicine Bacopa monniera as an adjunct to existing
Alzheimer's Dementia treatments
- Study 4: Effects of herbal extracts with glucoregulatory properties (e.g. Ginseng) in
neurocognitive function
The NICM centre is a collaborative research centre between Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne ,
the Alfred Hospital , Melbourne and the University of Western Australia , Perth.
