Students may study Biotechnology as a major in a single Science degree, or and may choose to combine their Science degree with either Arts (Media and Communications) or Business in a double degree.

Students may choose to study biotechnology as a single Science degree in combination with chemistry, environmental science, IT or social science subjects.

Three years full-time study at Hawthorn Campus for the single degree or four years study for a double degree.

About Biotechnology at Swinburne
Biotechnology is a powerful set of tools that utilizes living organisms (or parts of organisms) to make or modify products, improve plants or animals, or develop microorganisms for specific uses.
Swinburne's biotechnology course examines how chemical, biological, microbiological and biochemical processes impact living and once-living organisms, and how those organisms can be used in today's technological world.
Courses
Single or Double Degree Options
Swinburne's Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) can be taken as a single major with supporting subjects in chemistry, environmental science, information technology or social science.. Students can also undertake Biotechnology as a double degree with Arts or Business, providing knowledge in two separate fields and expanding your career opportunities. You can transfer between single and double degrees in the early stages of the course.
On completion of your Bachelor degree you may apply to join the Honours program. This usually involves one additional full-time year (or the equivalent part-time) of specialised academic studies. You can also apply to do honours and IBL in an accelerated mode of four years.

Research
The Environment and Biotechnology Centre conducts research in many diverse fields such as: sustainable polymers, agribiotechnology, bioactive compounds, bioremediation, catalysis, colloid and surface science, landfill engineering, molecular virology, public and environmental health, separation science, water quality.
Industry-Based Learning in Biotechnology (IBL)
Swinburne's Biotechnology courses include an optional Industry-Based Learning (IBL) year in which you may be placed in paid, supervised employment as part of your degree. IBL gives you practical experiences and a proven advantage in the job market
