I began my placement at Monash University, with the Faculty of Education, Marketing and Communications team in February. As part of my placement I have been able to work in a variety of areas including content creation, event management, student recruitment and alumni engagement.

A priority for me in my university studies was choosing a degree that would allow me to graduate not only with theoretical knowledge, but with relevant industry experience to give me an edge in the job market.

Grace completed her placement at Monash University.

Through my placement I've had the opportunity to actually apply marketing techniques I have learned at university and see concepts I have studied in practice. It has also given me exposure to aspects of marketing in industry that I have not studied. It’s my first experience in an office environment and it’s helped me develop my professional skills while surrounded by supportive, encouraging co-workers.

There really is no substitute for experience in the professional world, with real tasks and responsibility to help you learn and develop. There is nothing like trying to adapt and work in the area of marketing in real time, following projects from beginning to end, in a way assignments can't quite recreate. My placement has given me the opportunity to work and gain experience across a variety of areas. This is something I believe is really important at the beginning of my professional career.

I have been able to take ownership over projects, like running our Instagram, which has been so much fun and a great way to learn.

This placement has had the unexpected additional element of occurring during COVID-19. As a result of this, like many people, I have been working from home. Whilst this has made some things a little more challenging it has had some positives. It has forced me to step up and trust myself and my knowledge, building my confidence in a professional setting.

COVID-19 has also resulted in pivoting to a greater use of digital alternatives for things we would have previously done in person. This is something I otherwise probably wouldn't have gotten experience with.

Throughout this experience the whole team have been committed to keeping in contact, which has really helped with my adjustment. We even held a team awards meeting on Zoom, on the day we would have had our faculty awards to recognise each team member’s importance!

I couldn't have asked for a better environment to grow. The team I am a part of have welcomed me with open arms. They have been supportive and encouraging, answering endless questions. I have had so much fun with this team and I am already dreading the end of placement next year. I am so glad I grabbed the opportunity to go on placement with both hands!
