Library access
- Six campus libraries - you can use them all
- You can use the online resources anytime, anywhere
- Opening hours vary between campuses and througout the year
- The LateLab at Hawthorn is open 24 hours for access to computer workstations and electronic resources
You need...
- A Swinburne ID card and SIMS password - for borrowing, placing holds, renewing books, and other self-service functions
- A SIMS password for access to databases, subject materials online, access to some materials from off campus and as a login for computer workstations.
- A Swinburne email account - Library notices are sent to this address. You can forward Swinburne email to an email address of your choice at the link here
Help with log in
- SIMS and other IT enquiries, contact the ITS Service Desk 9214 5000
- If your staff ID barcode has 8 numbers in it, for example, U12345678 it can be activated for LateLab access. If not, you will need to get a new photo ID from any student information centre. It can then be activated for you at any Library service desk.
Connecting to the Library
From your office or home you can connect to Library resources:
- Use the Library search from the Library homepage
- Put holds on itemsthat are out on loan or at another campus - we notify you by email when the item is ready to collect
- Renew your loans
- Find online resources by subject, using subject starter guides designed specifically for Swinburne courses
- Search for newspaper and journal articles, statistics, industry data, legislation, and standards from a range of databases
- Browse or search for online journals, articles and books from the Library homepage
- Request inter-library loans
- Search publishers' and suppliers' online catalogues to find suitable teaching resources
- Contact us - telephone, email, SMS, or at a service desk
Liaison librarians
Liaison librarians are subject specialists for your faculty/school/discipline and can provide help with any Library matter including:
- Ordering books and other Library materials
- Research assistance
- Training workshops for your students
- Suggesting links to online resources for subject starter guides
- Contact your Liaison librarian
Borrowing
What you need:
- The normal loan period is 28 days. Loans for other material vary from two hours to 14 days.
- Most items can be renewed if they are not overdue or on hold for another person - there are penalties for late return and non-return of loans
- You will need your Swinburne ID card or staff special borrower card each time you borrow
Audiovisual resources and equipment:
- You can book and borrow audiovisual equipment to use for teaching
- Use the online AV and DVD booking form for material you want to use in class

Borrowing from other University and TAFE libraries
Swinburne has reciprocal borrowing arrangments with a number of libraries to allow you to borrow their books directly.

Inter-library loan and document delivery
You can request inter-library loans for books and articles not held at any Swinburne campus library.
- Requests must support current research and/or teaching at Swinburne
- To place and track your request online, go to the inter-library loans page
Services
Ordering
To select books and other Library material for your students to use
- Browse publishers' and suppliers' catalogues
- Purchase request forms are available from each campus library service desk, or use the Suggest books and more form
- Email the details of the item directly to your Liaison librarian
- Mark publishers' catalogues and blurbs and send them in the internal mail to your Liaison librarian
Subject materials
To make sure your students have easy access to the resources you recommend:
Subject Materials (e.g books and videos/DVDs)
- High demand Library books, particularly required or recommended textbooks
- Audiovisual items see Subject materials (Audiovisual)
- Most items are only available for two-hour loan to use within the Library
- To place a hard-copy item in the subject materials collection, submit a subject materials placement form
- Personal copies of items loaned to the Library by teaching staff can also be placed in the subject materials collection
- Contact the service desk at your campus
Subject materials online
- Provides online access to book chapters and journal articles scanned from print copies under the Copyright Act statutory licence for educational copying
- Create direct links in your Blackboard online subject website to articles in the Library databases
Photocopying & printing
- Photocopying and printing - a debit card system. Link includes a price list
- Faculty/School photocopying in the Library - procedure for charging a Faculty/School for the cost of photocopies made by teaching and non-teaching staff

Library training workshops
Help your students to make the best use of the Library. Ask your Liaison librarian to arrange:
For your students
- Orientation sessions to familiarise students with Library facilities and services, including the use of the Library search
- Research skills workshops to introduce students to Library material (especially online resources) and research methods relevant to particular subject areas
- At the start of the main teaching periods library training workshops are held. See the webpage for content and schedule
For staff
- Endnote - sessions for staff and higher degree research students on using this bibliographic software
