What will be obtained
- All material that is not held at Swinburne or CAVAL libraries in Melbourne. Material will be obtained from within Australia and from overseas.
- Material that is owned by Swinburne, but is missing.

- Print material held at CAVAL libraries in Melbourne will be obtained free of charge only for staff and higher degree by research students. Fees will be charged to obtain this material for all other categories of library borrower.
Swinburne staff and students can borrow books directly from these libraries through the CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Program. You can photocopy articles from journals at these libraries without having a CAVAL Borrower's card.
- Note: All requests submitted must support or relate to current research and/or teaching at Swinburne. Fees will be charged to obtain unrelated material.
What will not be obtained
- Material that is held at any Swinburne campus in any format, including books that are currently on loan or are held in a Reserve collection.
- Note: to obtain a book from another Swinburne campus, place a Hold on it through the Library Catalogue; to obtain a copy of an article from a journal at another Swinburne campus, fill in an Intercampus periodical article request form (PDF).

Copyright requirements
The Swinburne Library complies with the Australian Copyright Act 1968 and guidelines. To ensure compliance, the inter-library loan request form for copies contains a mandatory copyright declaration. In cases where your request is found to violate the copyright law, Inter-library Loan staff will inform you and advise on alternative access to the information.
How long will it take?
91% of requests are supplied within 10 days of requesting (2000 Inter-Library Loan National Benchmarking Survey).
One person may not request more than twenty items per week. If you submit more than twenty requests, some will be delayed.
You are requested to fill out the "What is the last date this item will be useful to you?" on the form. This helps us to ensure that your material is supplied when you need it.
Checking the status of a request
You can check the progress of your request online. Select "Track your requests" from the Inter-Library Loans Main Menu by entering your library barcode at the prompt.

Collection / Delivery
- Books and other items for loan
You will be notified by email when the item has been received. Loan items will be sent to the campus nominated as your preferred pickup location for collection and will be loaned out on your library card. Remember to bring your ID card when you come to collect it, with a printout of the email.
Material that is restricted for use within the library only will be available from the service desk in exchange for your ID card.
- Photocopies and other items to be kept by the requester
If you have an office on campus and you have provided your Internal Mail number, photocopied articles will be sent to you via the internal mail.
If an internal mail number has not been supplied, you will be notified by email when the item has been received, and it will be sent to the campus chosen as your pickup location. You will need to bring a printout of the email and your ID card when you come to collect it from the library.
- Electronic documents
Some material is now supplied to the library electronically. Formats and access conditions for these items vary, and may include file attachments by email or limited authorised access to a remote server. If the item you request is received electronically, we will advise you by email of the arrangements for delivery/access.
Note: as not all material is available in electronic format, it is not possible for you to request that an item be supplied electronically.

Loan periods and Renewals
The Loan period for items borrowed from other libraries varies from two weeks to seven weeks. The due date is clearly noted on the band on the front of the book.

ILL Renewal requests are not handled at the service desk or through the renewals phone service. ILL items can not be renewed online through the Library catalogue.

Items with restricted use
Other libraries reserve the right to place restrictions on material that they supply. Swinburne is bound to respect these restrictions. You may be required to use the item within Swinburne library, or sign a declaration that you have read it.
You will be notified if material that you have requested has restrictions upon it.
Material that is to be used only within the library will be available from the service desk in exchange for your ID card.
Loss of material
You must accept personal responsibility for the care of all items borrowed with your card and for their return in good condition. If an item is lost or damaged you must report this to the ILL office. You will be responsible for all costs and charges associated with the replacement or repair of the item.
