Australian Bureau of Statistics CodePlay Programming Competition
Would you like to gain valuable experience working with the Government in the emerging field of digital data management and analysis?
The Australian Bureau of Statistics is running its first IT programming competition over the summer to encourage students using open data standards to help find innovative ways to promote and transform statistical data using xml derived data formats.
With over $2000 and an iPad up for grabs, winners will receive cash prizes, and their work will be publicised on our website.
The ABS, in conjunction with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and other international organisations, have provided:
- example data
- links to current open-source tools
- demonstration applications for working with data, used in large statistical agencies
- tutorials to help you get started on an application that will help the international statistical community work towards providing open data to help drive important public policy
Whether you're a computer science whizz, statistical star or have an appetite for economics or health statistics, we value your interest and encourage you to enter our competition.

If you are selected to be involved in any of the competitions or industry opportunities as listed above - You will need to be a current full time student at Swinburne Faculty of ICT from January 2011 to December 2011 Please also take note of the application closing dates.

Microsoft Imagine Cup
The Imagine Cup is the world's premier student technology competition. Every year the Imagine Cup invites students to meet a challenge around a social cause.
The current Imagine Cup competition theme is 'Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems' (based on the UN's Millennium Development Goals). The Imagine Cup started in 2003 with only 1,000 competitors. In 2010, more than 325,000 of the world's most influential students from over 120 countries/regions registered for the Imagine Cup.
The competition categories include Software Design, Embedded Development, Game Design, Digital Media and Windows Phone 7.
Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) Program
The Microsoft Student Partners is a worldwide educational program to sponsor students majoring in disciplines related to technology. The MSP program attempts to enhance students' employability by offering training in skills not usually taught in academia, including knowledge in various Microsoft technologies.
MSPs run Microsoft events on campus, promoting Microsoft products and programs to students and faculty (2-3 positions available - applications close January 14th 2011).
You will need to be available to travel to Sydney (all expenses paid by Microsoft - bootcamp) between the dates of February 7th to 9th (it wil only be a 3 day event - exact dates to be advised).

Microsoft Student to Business (S2B) Program
The Students to Business (S2B) program is a Microsoft Community Initiative designed to connect Microsoft partners and customers with qualified students for entry-level and internship positions.
Through the S2B portal, students can access training, career advice, job opportunities and other information related to vocational positions.
