The Higher Education Studies within the VCE Program gives you the chance to study first year university units while completing Year 12. You'll receive credit for the units you’ve studied towards a relevant bachelor degree at Swinburne.

The program is recognised by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). VTAC will provide an ATAR increment as a fifth or sixth study score. A graded increment of 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, or 5 points will be included in the ATAR agregate according to level of achievement.

What can I study?

Prerequisite/Corequisite:
Students must have completed or be concurrently enrolled in IT Applications Units 3 & 4 or Software Development Units 3 & 4.

1. Web Development - HIT1091E
Web Development will provide students with advanced skills and knowledge to develop websites using HTML, Javascript and CSS within W3C standards. Additionally, this higher education study provides students with advanced skills and knowledge required to enhance the operational websites that have been designed in IT Applications.

2. Usability - HIT2316E
Usability will provide students with the skills and knowledge to create appropriate prototype user interfaces, to justify design decisions and to critically evaluate user interface designs including the use of the Swinburne Usability Testing Laboratory. In addition, Usability will provide students with the skills and knowlege to ensure that any user interfaces are appropriately designed and effective.


Why Higher Education Studies within the VCE?

Students who successfully complete the units in the Swinburne ICT Higher Education Studies within the VCE Program will be granted academic credit for two units (25 credit points) if they are subsequently successful in gaining a place in one of the following undergraduate programs:

Fact: Prior university study has proven to be among the best predictors of success for future study. In 2008-2009 12.2% of offers for undergraduate admission were made on the basis of prior university study (DEEWR, 2009).*

Swinburne ICT Higher Education Studies Units are accreddited undergraduate units recognised in many other degree programs within our university as well as at other universities.

Fees

The fee for each unit is $400.00. A total fee of $800.00 applies for the program.


Scholarships

Fee waiver scholarships are available and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Contact the ICT Outreach Officer via email or telephone for further information.


How to apply

Students applying for the Swinburne ICT Higher Education Studies within the VCE Program will be required to complete an application form and attach supporting information including a parent/guardian signature and a supporting statement from their VCE Coordinator or other appropriate person from the student's school. Students will also be required to submit a copy of Year 11 results after they have been released.

Students selected for the Swinburne Program will normally have demonstrated achievement in Year 11 studies. In addition the selection process will be based on the school's evaluation of the student's prior studies and motivation for higher education studies.

An orientation session for students accepted into the 2011 program will be held on Wednesday, February 22 2012.
