Discovering the Universe - HIT1501
In 2008 Swinburne will be offering all undergraduate students the opportunity to speed up, slow down or spread out their studies by enrolling in one or two selected elective units of study in an intensive 6-week Winter Term.
For the first time Swinburne will offer one of its astronomy units as an elective.. The introductory unit to astronomy, Discovering the Universe provides students with the opportunity to develop familiarity with modern astronomy.
You will develop an understanding of our place in the Universe including:
- the birth, life and death of stars;
- the structure of the Milky Way;
- galaxies and galaxy clustering;
- theories of dark matter;
- galactic evolution; and
- introductory cosmology
The Discovering the Universe unit will have a practical component and you will use
real astronomical datasets and conduct your own observational
experiments. Lectures will incorporate 3D animations and movies developed by the Swinburne Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing.
The graduate attributes relating to this unit help produce graduates who:
- are aware of environments;
- operate effectively in work and community situations; and
- capable in their chosen professional areas
More details on this unit can be found at: HIT1501 - Discovering the Universe
