Employer Responsibilities in relation to IBL

Swinburne University of Technology aims to provide the best possible experience for its students within the context of educational and employer needs, as well as legislative requirements.

This section outlines the responsibilities of the host IBL employer. The University and the Industry-Based Learning student also have responsibilities in relation to the Industry-Based Learning program; links to these are provided.

  • Provide the IBL Coordinator with a position description for the job being offered
  • Confirm with the IBL Coordinator all arrangements for those students selected to participate in the IBL program, including interview procedures, salary details and specific conditions of employment
  • Advise unsuccessful applicants in writing
  • Continue the employment placement according to the agreed-upon time period, for a minimum of 6 or 12 months (including annual leave) unless otherwise negotiated
  • Confirm with the IBL Coordinator that students are covered by insurance
  • Allocate a responsible staff member as industry supervisor to the IBL student
  • Ensure that appropriate staff are briefed about IBL and its objectives, as well as the job assigned to the IBL student
  • Support workplace visits from university supervisors, to discuss the progress of the placement with the student and the industry supervisor
  • Ensure that students gain experience relevant to their studies
  • Provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risk to health in accordance with legislation
  • Maintain a work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment, and related victimisation
  • Provide opportunities for the student to gain an overview of the host organisation's operations, including the business environment in which the organisation operates
  • Ensure that appropriate assistance, support and training are provided to the IBL student to enable the allocated job to be undertaken successfully and the aims of IBL to be achieved
  • Notify the IBL Coordinator of any problems arising with the placement
  • Provide a placement report as agreed upon with the IBL Coordinator
