Employers - Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of students are available for traineeships?

  • Students are available from over 80 countries in a wide range of disciplines with majority from technical backgrounds including engineering, applied sciences, IT as well as architecture and agriculture. Students can also be sourced from other disciplines as well such as business and media studies.
  • All students must have an excellent command of English.

When are trainees available?

  • Any time of year with most students usually ready to commence a traineeship from June onward.
  • Traineeships can be any length of time up to 12 months.

How do I request the exact type of student I am looking for?

  • Employer requirements are specified on a detailed Offer of Training form available on the website or by contacting IAESTE Australia.
  • Strict selection procedures in both Australia and overseas ensure that you receive a high-calibre student.

When do I need to request a student – is there a deadline?

Ideally it is best to submit your offers of training by January each year, in time for the IAESTE conference when the offers of training are exchanged between member countries. There is a larger pool of applicants at this time of year but it is still possible to source students at any time of year.

Who arranges the visa?

IAESTE Australia arranges all the visa documents for students under the Special Program Visa. Visas can be arranged for up to 12 months. If employers host a student initially for 6 months and would then like to extend the work period up to another 6 months, it is possible to extend the visa to a maximum 12 month period in total.

The visa processing time is approximately one month but can take up to 2-3 months for students requiring a medical exam if they are from a high risk health country or have lived in one in the last five years.

What other support does IAESTE provide?

IAESTE assists students with arrival and accommodation and an organised social program through the Local Committees (student run committees).

What will it cost?

  • IAESTE Australia charges no fees to initially source a student for employers. Once an employer has confirmed acceptance of a student then a small administration fee of $220 (incl GST) applies.
  • Employers are expected to pay a salary to cover the cost of basic living expenses, including accommodation.
  • Students pay their own air fares and insurance.

What if I have independently sourced a student from overseas that I want to employ but don’t know how to organise the visa?

IAESTE Australia can also assist in organising work visas on behalf of employers who source an overseas student themselves.  This is called a Reserved Offer.
