The Australia-Israel Fellow (ended in 2006)

quote In 2003 the Australia-Israel Scientific Exchange Foundation and the Commonwealth of Australia, as represented by the Australian Research Council, signed a Memorandum of Agreement to each provide funding for the Australia-Israel Fellowships. The Fellowships were established to promote scientific exchange with Israel through reciprocal exchange at the postdoctoral, research or senior research level and would disburse funding of up to $200,000 per annum for a period of three years.

In the Press release from Dr Nelson’s office, the Australian Government Minister for Education, Science and Training, emphasis was made on the common research strengths in Australia and Israel:
- “Australian and Israeli scientists have a number of common research strengths in areas such as water conservation and usage, reduction of high levels of skin cancers due to sun exposure, and stem cell research. By providing opportunities for Israeli researchers to work in Australian eligible higher education institutions and for Australian researchers to work in Israeli higher education and research institutions we expect to capitalize on our shared interests” (http://www.dest.gov.au/ministers/nelson/aug_03/n430_050803.htm)

The Australia-Israel Fellowship initiative was established under the ARC’s Linkage-International scheme which provided funding for the movement of researchers between Australian research institutions and centres of research excellence overseas. The program ceased in 2006.
