Key Skills Development

The five Swinburne graduate attributes signify that Swinburne intends that its teaching programs assist all its graduates to be:

  • Capable in their chosen professional, vocational or study areas;
  • Entrepreneurial in contributing to innovation and development within their business , workplace or community
  • Effective and ethical in work and community situations;
  • Adaptable and able to manage change; and
  • Aware of local and international environments in which they will be contributing (e.g. socio-cultural, economic, natural)

In order to assist students in developing these graduate attributes at unit of study level, Swinburne assesses their mastery of discipline-based knowledge and also provides feedback on their progress in attaining key generic skills, such as:

  • Teamwork skills;
  • Analysis skills;
  • Problem solving skills;
  • Communications skills;
  • Ability to tackle unfamiliar problems; and
  • Ability to work independently

Key generic skills may be contextualised at the discipline level and may include any generic skills as defined by professional or external accreditation bodies (e.g. Engineers Australia, CPA, ACS, APS).

These features of Swinburne's Professional Learning Model are available to domestic students undertaking undergraduate bachelor degree programs offered at Swinburne's Melbourne and Sarawak campuses. Restrictions apply to international students in Australia on student visas, students admitted into programs with significant levels of advanced standing and students who undertake Swinburne programs in online/distance mode, designed and offered in conjunction with overseas or industry partners or delivered by Open Universities Australia.
