Careers in the Curriculum

All Swinburne undergraduate students complete a zero-cost Careers in the Curriculum unit of study targeted at developing career planning and career management skills.

Careers in the Curriculum has been developed by Swinburne Careers and Employment which provides advice and feedback on completing job applications and undergoing interviews, and is directed at both obtaining professional (Industry-Based Learning) placements and graduate employment.

Careers in the Curriculum is a one semester compulsory unit normally undertaken in second year, in time to assist students to apply for IBL and other professional placements. The unit is tailored to the professional employment outcomes relevant to Swinburne's disciplines.

Each student is encouraged to identify their personal strengths, develop project management, team work and personal skills, and to apply their learning to real-world projects. These experiences enhance students’ CVs, preparing them for successful employment on graduation and for their future careers.

Includes optional seminars by Career Consultants on:

  • Self analysis of skills and training needs
  • Writing a winning resumé and cover letter
  • Networking that works
  • Graduate attributes and employer expectations
  • Interview theory and practice
  • Undergoing further selection processes
  • Developing a personal Career Action Plan
  • Specialist topics with guest speakers

Swinburne degree students are required to submit an application letter plus resumé in response to an advertisement they select, and receive written feedback from Swinburne’s expert Career Consultants.
These features of Swinburne's Professional Learning Model are available to domestic students undertaking undergraduate bachelor degree programs offered at Swinburne's Melbourne and Sarawak campuses. Restrictions apply to international students in Australia on student visas, students admitted into programs with significant levels of advanced standing and students who undertake Swinburne programs in online/distance mode, designed and offered in conjunction with overseas or industry partners or delivered by Open Universities Australia.
