Narges Ahmadi came to Australia as a refugee and she is now closer to her dream of becoming an engineer, thanks to a CFO Solution Scholarship. You can support students like Narges by making a donation.
Narges and her family fled Afghanistan in 2011. Their homeland was a country fraught with conflict and Narges knew that her aspiration of getting a quality education might never be realised.
“The environment in my home country made it very unsafe to attend school, especially for girls. Many schools were destroyed in the conflict or were not well resourced.”
In 2015, she arrived as a refugee in Australia with her family. Her love of mathematics and desire to build a new life propelled her to study a Diploma of Engineering (Unilink) at Swinburne.
“Swinburne gives students practical skills and the opportunity to complete a placement. The Swinburne MASH (Mathematics and Statistics Help) drop-in centre is amazing at providing support to students.”
Being new to the country, supporting her family and learning a different language made the task of working while studying full-time almost impossible.
“I have a large family and I want help my parents take care of my siblings. I also want to get a good education, because I know it has the potential to transform my life. This makes it difficult for me to take a paid job.”
This was a fantastic opportunity. The financial support allowed me to focus on my studies and continue my volunteer work. Once you have financial support, everything else falls into place.
Studying full-time has not stopped Narges from spending a few hours a week pursuing her other passions – writing poetry, reading and tutoring students.
“I take time to volunteer at Swinburne and a Refugee Centre. It gives me a sense of fulfilment and purpose. I want to help people and support them on their quest to learn and better themselves.”
Narges is now a permanent resident and she is adamant about her future career.
“I hope I can pathway into a Bachelor of Civil Engineering after my diploma. Thinking about the difficulties I experienced in my home country made me aspire to someday help communities build schools and universities. This will improve education and open new opportunities for people.”
“This degree will help me reach my dreams. I will be the first female engineer in my family and I know I will make them proud!”
Her experiences, perseverance and desire to help others earned her The CFO Solution Scholarship in 2017.
"This was a fantastic opportunity. The financial support allowed me to focus on my studies and continue my volunteer work. Once you have financial support, everything else falls into place."
The CFO Solution Scholarship was established by corporate accounting firm The CFO Solution, to support a student from a disadvantaged background studying in the tertiary sector to achieve their full academic potential by reducing their need to work outside of study.
