  • Swinburne has been ranked in The Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings as one of the top 500 universities in the world.
  • Given that there are estimated to be about 8000 Universities in the world, this is a considerable achievement, particularly for a relatively small institution.

Modern Facilities

  • Swinburne has begun the development of the new Advanced Technology Centre (ATC), which will provide state-of-the-art research and teaching spaces and attract world class researchers, both nationally and internationally. The ATC aims to be one of the first 5 star green buildings in an Australian university. It will include many sustainable features such as energy-efficient lighting, escalators and air conditioning and the use of recycled water throughout the building.
  • The ATC will be home to some of Swinburne's key research facilities including:
    • Swinburne Nanophotonic Applications Facility
    • Centre for Aging: Measurement and Design Suite
    • Microfabrication and Microanalytical Facility
    • Advanced Molecular and Proteomics Facility
    • Brain Sciences Institute
    • Strong Structures Laboratory
    • High Temperature Processing Laboratory.
    • The completed Wakefield Street development at Hawthorn was a $90M public & private partnership incorporating student accommodation, University office space, retail and rental office space, and parking.
    • The University carryied out an $166M Capital Management Plan for building works & refurbishments at all Melbourne campuses. In Sarawak, Malaysia, a new campus and student accommodation centre has been constructed in collaboration with the State Government of Sarawak.

Swinburne Model for Professional Learning

  • Swinburne's Professional Learning Model provides undergraduates with a structured range of development opportunities, including career assistance embedded within the curriculum, complementary Electives Plus studies designed to diversify career profile, international study and work-integrated learning opportunities, and options to speed up, slow down or spread out studies to suit life commitments. As well, final-year curricula feature industry-oriented capstone projects designed to prepare graduates for the transition to professional practice.
  • The Model will continue to evolve in order to ensure that Swinburne continues to produce professionally-oriented graduates who are equipped with skill sets which are matched to contemporary industry needs.

Careers In The Curriculum

  • All commencing Swinburne undergraduate students will complete a zero-cost Careers in the Curriculum unit of study developed by Swinburne Careers and Employment Unit and targeted at developing career planning and career management skills.
  • Careers in the Curriculum is a one-semester compulsory unit normally undertaken in 2nd year, in time to assist students to apply for IBL and other professional placements. The unit is tailored to the professional employment outcomes relevant to Swinburne's disciplines. In conjunction with a series of optional seminars, students submit an application letter plus resumé in response to an advertisement they select, and receive written feedback from Swinburne's expert Career Consultants.

Electives Plus

  • electives+plus combinations provide Swinburne degree students with options to broaden their career skills and strengthen their employability by selecting from units outside their degree discipline.
  • Swinburne degree students can choose to study electives+plus sequences of up to three units from a range of themes. Click here for a detailed listing of themes and units of study.
  • electives+plus combinations are available in all Swinburne degree programs subject to timetabling constraints, with the exception of double degree programs, specialist double major degrees, and where entry has been approved with advanced standing.

New Winter Term, 2009

  • In 2009 Swinburne will be offering undergraduate students the opportunity to speed up, slow down or spread out their studies by enrolling in 1 or 2 elective units in an intensive 6-week Winter Term.
  • These units of study are selected from Electives Plus sequences (see above) which provide Swinburne degree students with options to broaden their career skills and strengthen their employability by completing up to three specially selected units of study from outside their degree discipline.

Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) and Student Support at Swinburne

SSAA
  • As a result of the introduction of the Federal Government's Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) legislation, collection of a compulsory General Service Fee is prohibited from July 2006. As a result, the Swinburne Student Amenities Association (SSAA) Limited has been set up to work collaboratively with the University and students to ensure a broad range of services and clubs are offered at all campuses, including:

  • SSAA is a wholly owned company of Swinburne with student representation on its Board. Its purpose is to secure the on-going provision and enhancement of quality, cost effective services to students.
  • All Swinburne students are entitled to join Swinergy, an educational and training centre providing innovative quality training in Sport, Recreation and Fitness. Boroondara Council and Swinburne have also signed a new deal that gives University students entry to the Hawthorn swimming pool at nominal cost.
